Stream The Electro Wars

April 29, 2011

Pitchfork is streaming a documentary about the rise of “electro” music on the internet and in life in the past few years.  There are tons of names in this, including Steve Aoki, Laidback Luke, A-Trak, Diplo, Lil’ Jon, LMFAO and much more.  I only caught the first ten minutes or so because my computer’s being rell frail, but from what I can tell it’s about the current role of electro in the rising EDM movement and now the mainstream and I’m sure tons of insight about its history and future.  Apparently a sequel is already in the works about the all-encompassing house scene.  This was supposed to have only been streaming until this past Wednesday but it’s still up, so catch it while you can.

Thirsty Thursday: Lil’ Jon

January 27, 2011

Every Thursday, That Whiiite aspires to fuel your ignorance with Thirsty Thursday, bringing you high-tempo jams that are the audio equivalent of Four Loko.  Indulge in the seediest depths of your soul and come get white-boy wasted with us.  Click here for the Thirsty Thursday archives.

FIRST, how much respect do you have for Lil’ Jon?  How many equally talent-less producers completely fall out of the game like Jermaine Dupri  or over-exert themselves like Diddy?  Lil’ Jon is humble enough to know that his marginal benefit for music is exactly equal to Fatman Scoop.  That’s fine though, since Fatman Scoop is responsible for THE GREATEST PARTY SONG OF ALL TIME.  Seriously tho, how many people in music enough are humble enough to know exactly what they bring to the table, and don’t try to do one thing more?  The answer’s not surprising when 9-minute rap videos with ballerinas are considered transcendent.

Related: how fucking good is “Be Faithful“?  Everyone today thinks that more is better, but it leads to messy and arbitrary mashups that are better known for their notoriety than their energy.  The best part about Be Faithful is that nobody knows any of the songs it samples anymore but it’s still a club staple.  The lesson as always: screaming all over the track is always the best choice.

SECOND, I realize this Sidney Samson remix is pretty much the same song as “Amsterdam,” but it’s still amazing.  I have every intention of milking this Dutch house movement until it makes people prefer sitting at home quietly to doing drugs and hearing 800 siren stabs in a shade under three minutes.  This song reminds me of the “songs” I used to make in Fruity Loops in 2005.  If only I had access to Lil’ Jon.  God bless the Netherlands and the internet.

Laidback Luke Feat. Jonathan Mendelsohn – Timebomb

January 21, 2011

I’m very picky with male vocals. Jonathan Mendelsohn, Richard Bedford and Christian Burns are the way to go for quality male vocals in EDM. Still, it all depends on the track because male vocals can sometimes just sound SO corny. This track is from 2010 but I’ve been hearing it on bpm and it grew on me. Jonathan’s vocals are pretty damn good though. happy he does trance & house music as well.

DL: Laidback Luke Feat. Jonathan Mendelsohn – Timebomb (Original Mix) (320kbps)
