A “True North” NHL – With the Thrashers Gone, it’s Time for a Change

June 2, 2011

They say that the third time is the charm, right? The second attempt at NHL hockey in Atlanta certainly wasn’t.

RIP GURU

April 19, 2011

A goddamn shame that I have to make this post.  Even after his passing, Guru is criminally underrated.  Hip-hop nerds:  doesn’t Gang Starr have more classic songs than any other group ever??  That Full Clip collection is just manic.  The thing that impresses me the most about Gang Starr’s career is that they could have stopped after Hard to Earn and still have been one of the greatest groups of all time and in the class of Golden Era legends like Kool G. Rap and Big Daddy Kane, but they came back with Moment of Truth (which is IMO their best album) and evolved their sound for a new generation.  I loved The Ownerz, too.

To me, Guru is one of rap’s unsung heroes because especially in the last ten-fifteen years, “the game” has loved the prototype of the punchline rapper who can wow you on certain songs or even just certain lines but are entirely disposable for the scope of an album and are basically a blank slate for Producers X and Y to stamp their sound onto.  The ability to rap consistently for an entire album or, god forbid, several albums is completely underrated in the culture.  Like…is there even a modern Gang Starr??? Blu & Exile?? Like 300 people listen to them.

Unfortunately Guru will never be hailed as a legend because he didn’t have an overwhelming personality and he didn’t promote values you could wear on a shirt to be cool.  And to people saying that DJ Premier made Gang Starr, go listen to the Group Home album and tell me that beats can solely make a classic album.

Buncha songs & such after the jump.

R.I.P. Nate Dogg ???!!!???!!!???!!!???

March 16, 2011

WTF????  I leave the house for five hours and this is what happens????  When I was in seventh grade, I bought a Nate Dogg mixtape in Chinatown.  I guarantee that I will never hear an 80-minute CDR as enjoyable as that one.  An absolute legend and you will probably never see a contemporary singer on so many hits* again.  Did he do the bridge on Kush???  D/Ls off my harddrive and Youtube links after the jump.  R.I.P. to my integrity after realizing that I don’t have Regulate on my computer.
