Single Review: Lady Gaga – Judas

May 7, 2011

O, so this is why ppl hate Kanye.  I suppose that peppering in arbitrary symbolism to your videos doesn’t in fact give you “artistic integrity.”  Wait, you do know that being different doesn’t make you necessarily “good” right?  Especially when your music sounds exactly like all of the other music that’s out right now?  At the end of the day you’re still a pop artist.  I was gonna go on this huge rant about America’s obsession with stardom especially in the social media age and our obsession with the “it” factor and our collective increasing belief that we all have “it” despite our decreasing talent and work ethic, but it’s not even worth it.  I guess I’m just mad that she’s being rewarded for making a retread of an older single simply because she called it “Judas” and threw a bunch of crosses into the video.

Shit’s catchy tho.

4/10.

Michael Jackson – Hollywood Tonight (Chuckie Remix)

May 4, 2011

This one’s been out for a month or two, but it never caught on with me initially.  For whatever reason, I added this to my work playlist and replayed it no less than ten times today.  I’m not a huge Chuckie fan but he gives this one the perfect touch as a potential radio banger and a nice warmup track for the summer festival circuitO yea and then this, too.  There’s really no way you can complain about these electronic festivals; the artist pool is small enough that the lineup is going to be bursting at the seams at each and every one of them.  God forbid Deadmau5 or whomever doesn’t play.  I swear, music fans are the worst.

Also hoping that the electronic community embraces MJ vocals more; his vocals are perfect for these silly Dutch tracks.  My brother DJ’d a show last week for an art auction and a bunch of kids requested that he played Michael Jackson so they could dance.  How dope is that?  How timeless will his music be?  Do you think white kids born in 2030 will be requesting Lady Gaga songs at unabashedly bougie events?

Single Review: Adele – Someone Like You

April 27, 2011

Yo bro, a bunch of us are gonna cry to that new Adele, are you down?  Obvi.  Fucking dope ass heartfelt piano ballad, this one is even better than Hometown Glory.  Is Gossip Girl still on?  Shouldn’t someone get killed/married/pregnant/broken up with to this song?  Still waiting for Hov to recruit her for his next mega-hit.  I saw some dubstep remixes of this song; are you kidding me?  There’s literally no way you could touch up this song with mega-bass or whatever, the whole point is that it’s a piano ballad.  Gotta say with all snark removed that I’m absolutely happy for her success, it’s unfortunately a rarity in the industry to see someone succeed with as much talent as she has.  Yes, I know how that sounds.  Go get 21 now.

10/10.

Estelle f. Rick Ross – Break My Heart

April 19, 2011

LOL, “I can be pretentious but he loves me all the same.”  The bass is dripping off of this one.  Rozay is pretty much allowed on any single in any genre at this point – shouts out to Tom Ford and red snapper fish.

Robyn – Call Your Girlfriend (Kaskade Remix)

April 19, 2011

Jesus Christ.  Kaskade just goes on these pop songs and embarrasses the original producers – this run he’s on is like the Drought 3 of house production.  Gotta give credit to Robyn – her vocals are pretty fucking incredible too.  I’d say that Robyn has no chance of really blowing up stateside because of the androgyny but who knows – I bet a bunch of 13-year olds bought “Just Dance” on Itunes the day they heard Gaga had a penis.  Still waiting for that song that officially “brings” EDM over to the states – Britney was the tip of the iceberg but I have a feeling that someone is gonna come out of nowhere this summer with a song that causes the full EuroInvasion.  As long as it’s not this one.

David Guetta f. Rihanna – Who’s That Chick? (Afrojack Remix)

April 14, 2011

The internet’s gonna be super condescending about this one since it came out way back when, but this is prolly the best Afrojack remix I’ve heard thusfar.  That drop around 4:16 is god-given.
