Murs & Tabi Bonney: Hip-Hop and Love

August 10, 2011

Song is about two weeks old with average lyrics from both artists.  Unoriginal concept but I dig the beat.  Kind of reminds me of Life Under the Scope and is making me look forward to the Murs and Ski Beatz collabo, especially since Ski did so well with Curren$y’s Pilot Talk 1 and 2.

Yo evypoo!!!! Remember this.  It was our 5 borough recovery song.

This Summer’s hip-hop

July 21, 2011

So it turns out I have Vertigo(no not that shitty U2 album).  Basically, I’m an even bigger bum and now have even more time to pretentious-ly rate music.  Luckily, this summer has provided some hip-hop that I can enjoy.  First off I’ll start with Otis by Kanye West Jay-z. Single Review: Curren$y-She Don’t Want a Man

June 5, 2011

8.5/10  Weekend at Burnie’s is shaping up nicely.  I love this beat, it reminds me of Organized Noize’s production on ATLiens/Aquemini  era Outkast.  Curren$y lyrics are swagged out and contains his usual slang.  Hopefully, Curren$y can obtain some longevity and continue to ride his current wave of success.

Straight out the muthafuckin slums dungeons* of rap.  British Columbia what’s good?  This dude is a huge clown, but does a ton of research for each interview and gives the artists gifts that usually leaves them stunned and gets them talking about their past.  I’ve only watched his interviews with rappers and he has at least a dozen worth watching.  This one especially is hilarious because Curren$y is such a clown in juxtaposition to his ultra-serious mic persona.

Curren$y & Alchemist – Covert Coup EP

May 5, 2011

WTF?  How did I miss this one???  Curren$y is Curren$y, so that means that 1) it’s a must D/L and 2) it’s free.  “Let the lil’ homey kick it in the auto shop with us, long as he make store runs and he keeps his mouth shut.”  There’s a song on this literally called “Blood Sweat and Gears.”  Gibbs and Prodigy on this too??!!!???  Still, I gotta admit the real star of this one is the Alchemist.  He’s been on absolute fire the last few years and just to start shit, he blows Jake One out of the water.  Real talk, he has the best basslines in hip-hop right now.  Was “Different Worlds” really nine years ago?  Where does the time go?

DL:  Curren$y & Alchemist f. Prodigy – The Type (192 kbps)

DL:  Curren$y & Alchemist f. Freddie Gibbs – Scottie Pippen (192 kbps)

Upcoming Releases I’m Looking Forward To

January 12, 2011

In 2011, release dates are pretty fickle given the nature of the internet and the propensity of albums being pushed back.  Still, it’s fun as a music fan to anticipate, so here are some upcoming releases I’m looking forward to, with my lolzy attempts at genre categorization:

Curren$y – Return to the Winner’s Circle (Mixtape)

January 3, 2011

I’m putting this up because Curren$y is in a class with a select few where I like them so much right now I’ll post up their new music whether I’ve fully formed an opinion on it or not.  I’ve been listening to this for the past few hours and to be honest it’s a little disappointing compared to his ’10 output (Smokee Robinson and the two Pilot Talks – an admittedly high standard).  Off the bat, his flow are dope and the beats (Rick Ross – Live Fast, Die Young, Raekwon – Rainy Dayz, OutKast – Mainstream to name a few) are dope.  Lyrically, however, it’s a step down.  Is that to be expected when his subject matter is so narrow?  Depends, lots of rappers have a pretty shallow subject pool, but to me, Curren$y always stood out because of his nuances and attention to detail when talking about things.  Even though he raps in a very stream-of-conscious manner, his raps are always very fluent – if there was a 2011 (?) lazy pothead version of Biggie, it’d be something like Curren$y.  On this one he talks about all of the same things, but it lacks the spark that his other stuff did.

Not to say that it’s bad, he flows well enough that it sounds good, but I don’t think it’ll have the replayability of Pilot Talk 2.  I guess he’s put out so much music lately that it’s hard to complain (especially for something free), but dayum, I’m trying to get that new new, y’know???  Tracklist and mixtape DL after the jump.

DL:  Curren$y – Daze of Thunder

DL:  Curren$y – Rain Delay

DL:  Curren$y – Trophy Case
