Single Review: Childish Gambino – Freaks and Geeks (+ Star Slinger Remix)

April 4, 2011

I haven’t watched CB4 since high school, but I can imagine that the state hip-hop is in in 2011 is actually worse than the one predicted in that movie.  This dude is from a major network sitcom and is getting waves of buzz on the internet because he raps too.  Cool man – crank that social network advertising.  The only problem is that people are actually taking him seriously.

It’s not really cool to talk about how many people you kill in your raps anymore, so the only thing left is talking about how big your dick is and how many girls you’re fucking.  A lot of these new school rappers getting love (J. Cole, Mac Miller, etc…) want to be every men yet want to rap with swag, so their best shot as braggadocio are being third-rate Weezy knockoffs when it comes to talking shit*.  At least Wayne has a sense of humor about it, though.  I could never see Childish Gambino being weird enough to release something like “Pussy Monster” and that’s really the central problem.  Yes, your punchlines are clever, but that doesn’t make your persona clever, it in fact just makes it tired because everyone uses punchlines.  Gambino sounds amped up at his own rap skill, but he also sounds like a desperate loser trying to convince us how cool he is.

I feel like with every post I make, the culture devolves towards whiiite people like me who want to be hip when they put their Ipod’s on at a party by telling everyone that they found a clip of the guy from Community rapping.  Maybe then it all makes sense; bloggers are as eager to impress as Gambino is.  Just be sure to not show your face to everyone when you’re crying at the Bon Iver song next on your playlist.

Shout out to Star Slinger tho.

*  Also, talking about being better at rapping than everyone isn’t cool anymore apparently.
