Chip Tha Ripper – Gift Raps

March 10, 2011

I’m not the type to normally check for someone like Chip Tha Ripper, but I heard good things about this one so I decided to check it out.  The landscape is sparse enough in March that hip-hop fans are compelled to check for artists they normally wouldn’t check for, which I think is 5% of the reason that Kush & OJ blew up last year.

Chip is cool.  He can definitely carry an album.  He’s a solid 7/10.  The real star of this album, however, is Chuck Inglish of the Cool Kids, who have been seemingly AWOL the last few years.  Or at least they’ve been absent to me: I listened to Gone Fishing maybe twice and didn’t even check for Tacklebox.  The production is very evolved from what I remember of the Cool Kids though – Chuck Inglish’s beats sound like your beats on Fruity Loops if you actually knew how to use it.  Every drum bit seems perfectly placed and calling the beats minimalist only understates 1) how awesome the synths/melodies are and 2) how awesome it is when he has Chip rhyming right over the break with no help.  For those looking for new boom bap: look no further.  This is perfect driving music.

Next up: we need a Curren$y/Chuck Inglish mixtape.  Get it done!
