Single Review: Lupe Fiasco f. Skylar Grey – Words I Never Said

February 1, 2011

How fucking ignorant are hip-hop A&Rs?  Industry rule #4081 must be that record company people are fucking dumb.  I listened to this song and it sounded awfully familiar, realizing that it had the same producer and singer as the DR. DRE SINGLE I REVIEWED YESTERDAY.  How fucking soulless and condescending are these cut-and-paste jobs?  It pains and insults me as an honest fan of the genre.

While Lupe’s subject matter is a little scattershot and obvious, he’s the only one within a stone’s throw of mainstream recognition that can get away with shit like criticizing Obama and saying that Building 7 was demolished.  And if you forgot, he can rap his fucking ass off.  With a different backdrop, this song could have been the skeleton of a genuine political rap hit.  Instead, it’s wholly ironic, a revolution on wax confined by the limits of mainstream radio.  Maybe it could have been a big hit if they didn’t try so hard to make it a big hit.

I read somewhere that the album is 70% what Lupe wanted and 30% what the label wanted.  If this is him compromising, I can’t wait to hear what he actually wanted to do.

Lasers out March 8th.

6/10.
